dc.description.abstract | In this study the solar influence on the semidiurnal tide was investigated. This was done through investigation of the connection between the semidiurnal tide amplitude in the mesosphere-lower thermosphere (MLT) and the Y$_{10.7}$ index. The Y$_{10.7}$ index was used as a measure of the solar irradiance and thus the solar energy deposition in the MLT. The semidiurnal tide amplitude was found by implementing a Fourier series fit to meridional wind data obtained from the Super Dual Auroral Radar Network (SuperDARN) radar at Saskatoon, Canada.
Using the Lomb-Scargle method and a cross correlation analysis, periodic behavior in the data was investigated. For the 27 day periodicity approximately $\SI{20}{\%}$ of the cross correlation analyses of the two observables gave periodicities close to the 27-day solar rotation cycle. The correlation coefficients were found to be between $\sim0.2$--$0.3$, with the semidiurnal tide lagging the solar irradiance by $\sim10 \pm 1$ days. There was also an indication towards the 27 day periodicity being more prominent during years of solar maximum. A weak correlation between the yearly averages of the semidiurnal tide amplitude and the Y$_{10.7}$ index was also found. From the investigation of the 11-year cycle a periodicity of $\sim$14.9 years was found. This value is higher than anticipated, but with only 19 years of data available a more accurate finding could not be expected.
