The present study aimed at comparing physical activity (PA) levels in youths who had dropped out of organized sport compared with those who were still participating. Furthermore, the effect of having dropped out voluntarily, compared to involuntary on PA-levels was investigated. Research design and methods: A digital questionnaire was sent to secondary-school- and high school students, and was ultimately completed by 87 informants. 44 were in secondary school (8th to 10th grade), whereas 43 attended high school (1st or 3rd year). Results: Informants generally reported physical activity levels meeting the current physical activity recommendations. Participants in organized sport had somewhat higher PA-levels compared to those who had dropped out of sport, but significant differences were found for moderate-intensity physical activity only. The majority of those who had dropped out from organized sport, regardless of gender, had dropped out between the ages of 13-18. One third of dropouts had dropped out involuntarily. Among both drop out-groups, voluntary and involuntary, a majority had wished to continue their participation in sport. Post-dropout physical activity levels were somewhat higher among those who had dropped out involuntarily, compared to those who had dropped out voluntarily, but groups were small, so results are uncertain. Conclusions: The physical activity levels of those who have dropped out of organized sport seem not so different from those who continue their participation. There seems to be a trend that those who drop out involuntarily have higher level of post-dropout physical activity than those who drop out voluntarily, but numbers are small so results are uncertain. Most youths meet physical activity recommendations, and numbers would have been even higher if guidelines for adults were used on older youths. Due to the corona situation, the sample was limited, thus results are uncertain. The results, however, would motivate a new study on the same research questions, and with a larger sample. Keywords: physical activity, youth, organized sport, voluntary and involuntary dropout
