AbstractBackground: In Norway there’s a high amount of dark numbers related to child neglect and child abuse. In the media we are told stories about different children that has been betrayed by family member and on top of that; not being taken care of by Health care. As a nurse who works in pediatric, you will have an unique opportunity to identify and help these children.
Method: The study is a systematic literature review and is based on seven research studies. The research studies were found by systematic search. The study is also based on non-fictions, curriculum, and statistics.
Results: The research studies have shown that nurses have difficulties to identify and care for children who has been neglected. The main reasons for this are the lack of knowledge, practice, and time. Several nurses also experience it as psychologically demanding to work with this patient group but find emotional support in colleagues. Some nurses find it challenging to report suspicions and point out that good communication with the child welfare service can be a promoting factor.
Conclusions: In order for a nurse to be able to identify and care for children who are exposed to neglect or child abuse, one must have knowledge of children's physical and mental development, to be able to detect abnormalities. One must be able to communicate with children and their families. It is appropriate if one can distinguish between inflicted and non-inflicted injuries. It is important to be aware of one's own experiences and thoughts, so that one can act professionally and thus be able to take care of the child. One must be aware that one cannot take care of the child alone, and that one is dependent on interdisciplinary collaboration.
