In elite football a heating system is required to be able to use artificial turf pitches during the winter. It takes a lot of energy to be able to keep the playing surface soft for the players so they avoid injuries. This thesis focuses on the underheating system at SalMar artificial turf with the main focus on temperature development in the construction, various heat transfer fluids, pump control and system regulation. The temperatures in the artificial turf were mapped at different depths using iButton temperature sensors. Excel was used to organize all the temperature readings and used to visual the readings using graphs. MATLAB was used to see if an insulating layer under the heating pipes contributes to reduced heat loss. The simulation showed that insulation under the heat pipes contributed to reduced heat loss, but the insulation also reduced the accumulated heat under the heat pipes. By using different measuring equipment, the current draw of the pump and the balancing valve was measured in order to be able to say something about the volume flow in the underheating system. This was used to look on the workload of the pump and other possibilities for pump regulation. Through this task, it was observed that the pump installed on the SalMar artificial turf is working on max capacity, and it is recommended to install a larger pump to increase the speed of heat transfer fluid in the heating pipes in the pitch deck. To regulate a new pump, as well as reduce pump work, it may be relevant with a speed control, so they can reduce the speed when the need for underheating is minimal. The regulation system used on the SalMar artificial turf is a on and off regulation that provides a high energy consumption. In order to optimize regulation, it is recommended to explore more predictive solutions, which Guard offers.
