Decision making is made throughout the life cycle of a field, where the greatest opportunity of influencing the costs is at the earliest phases. Hence, accurate decisions are important to be made in the planning phase of a field development. Optimization of drilling site location plays an important role in reducing total field development costs. If the wellhead is moved at different locations on the seabed for the same reservoir target, the result is different shapes and curvatures of the well trajectory. A long trajectory typically requires more directional control, more time spent drilling, tripping, etc., resulting in higher costs compared to a shorter trajectory. On the other hand, longer wells require fewer costs related to subsea facilities and installation as they are typically placed together in templates. Therefore, an important aspect in the planning phase is to identify the best field layout solution regarding optimal well trajectories and drilling sites and at the same time minimizing the total costs. In this thesis, it is introduced a cost model that calculates the subsea drilling and well construction costs related to the trajectory of a well. Quite a few input parameters are required for this model, but as a result, the model itself is not restricted to a geographical area, in contrast to most cost estimation methods today. This cost model will divide the planned trajectory into intervals, where a new interval is automatically created if there is a new casing setting depth or a change in direction, both changing the rate of penetration (ROP). The interval division ensures a more detailed cost calculation of a well compared to a traditional section division. Expected steering parameters from the user are used to calculate the ROP which automatically will be adjusted to any curvatures along the planned well. Time spent drilling, tripping, running casing, cementing, and logging for a well is estimated for each interval. Then, together with the cost of casings and completion, the total cost of subsea drilling and well construction is calculated. Completion costs remain to be included in a more detailed manner to complete the cost model. Furthermore, the subsea drilling and well construction cost model should be tied to a cost model describing subsea facilities and installation costs. In this way, the optimal field layout solution can be identified in an early phase of planning by minimizing the total field development costs.
