utilfredsstillende for metoden.
dc.description.abstract | An investigation into the mechanical properties of a selection of medium-dense hardwoods
has been completed. Initially, some background theory about timber and the wooden
structure has been presented. The wooden species investigated in the study were beech
(Fagus), birch (Betula), and oak (Quercus). Further, the study consists of a review of existing
literature, methods, and results in the fields. A presentation of applicable methods that
could be used to determine properties has been briefly explained, and lastly, experimental
work, testing Norwegian oak in compression, shear, and bending, will be completed.
Results from the experiments have been compared to the results found from the existing
literature. The testing in compression parallel to grain gave a modulus of elasticity of 9894,9
MPa, which is approximately 18% lower than expected results from the literature review,
suspecting that the specimen dimensions used are unsatisfying for the method. Modulus of
elasticity perpendicular to the grain direction was found to be 1231,7 MPa, which are in the
expected range.
A numerical analysis was applied to determine the shear modulus. The test pieces used for
the experiments were not optimized for the post-processing of the results as the shear-zone
did not consist of pure shear. Nevertheless, the analysis was made, concluding with a shear
modulus of 2475 MPa.
Testing in bending was completed according to EN408, and the post-processing was done
applying beam theory. The modulus of elasticity found in bending was 17529,4 MPa, which
is higher than previously acquired results. On the other hand, the bending strength was
found to fit into existing results with a value of 102,22 MPa.
