The Harry Potter film series has had a great cultural impact, and have been seen by millions. And yet there’s a lot left to be desired when it comes to texts written about the music behind the popular films. Few know who actually composed the music and even fewer know that it was composed by four different composers across eight films. If you come across any writings about the subject, it is most likely about John Williams’ contributions to the series. This text tries to make sense out of a piece of media that hasn’t been talked about that much. The text focuses on three different leitmotifs that we find in Alexandre Desplat’s scores to the last two Harry Potter films, and I propose different interpretations to the meaning behind the music. It also examines the various intertextual references we find in the music that makes the music in the last Harry Potter films sound like it’s a Harry Potter film. The main questions I answer in this text is as follows: What function does leitmotifs and intertextuality play in the music of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 1 and 2, and how does the music fit in the greater whole that is the Harry Potter film series. Through my analysis of the music, I’ve discovered how Desplat’s music plays an important narrative function: both acting as a mirror to the story and as an independent way of addressing things before the film. I argue that intertextual references play a role in making the film series feel connected and magical.
