Hvordan kan musikk formidle mening? - en analyse av utvalgt filmmusikk

Abstract

Denne bacheloroppgaven utforsker hvordan musikk kan formidle mening. Gjennom analyse av utvalgte filmmusikkstykker diskuterer oppgaven hvordan stykkenes gitte musikalske virkemidler brukes for å støtte opp og strukturere filmens fortelling. Analysene er basert på den auditive og visuelle opplevelsen av de gitte filmene. I tillegg gikk jeg fram for å lære meg så mye som mulig om temaet før jeg gjorde analysene, slik at analysenes kunne være basert på mest mulig kunnskap og erfaring. Bevissthet rundt selve analysen og tolkeprosessen var en viktig del av prosjektet, der analysens poeng skulle være objektive eller intersubjektive. Oppgaven går også igjennom forskjellig teori som jeg hadde i mente under analyseprosessen. Temaene er: musikk som en del av et visuelt uttrykk, og hvordan gir diegetisk-musikk en ny dimensjon til opplevelsen. All musikk innebærer en eller annen form for konnotasjon, og ulike strukturlikheter med «ikke-musikalske» fenomener, som vil gi oss gitte assosiasjoner. Hvordan musikk kan skape forventning, utfra gitte musikalske mønster. Vi kan oppleve lav-pitsj lyder som en trussel som resultat av evolusjon. Det ses også på hvordan musikkteknologi har åpnet for nye muligheter rundt lyd-manipulasjon. Spørsmålet «Hvordan musikk kan formidle mening» har ikke et absolutt svar, men oppgavens resultat viser ulike egenskaper ved musikk, og hvordan disse kan brukes til å formidle mening.

This bachelor thesis explores how music can convey meaning. Through analysis of selected filmmusic scores, the thesis discusses the different film-scores musical means are used to support and structure the film’s narrative. The analyzes are based on the auditory and visual experiences of the given films. In addition, I tried to learn as much as possible about the topic before I did the analyzes, so that they could be based on as much knowledge and experience as possible. Awareness of the analysis itself and the interpreting process was an important part of the project since the result of the analysis were to be objective or intersubjective. The thesis also reviews different theory that I used during the analysis process. The themes include: music as part of a visual expression, and how diegetic music adds a new dimension to the experience. All music involves some form of connotation, and various structural similarities to “unmusical” phenomenon’s, which will give us relevant associations. How music can create expectation, based on given musical patterns. We can experience low pitch sounds as a threat because of evolution. It also looks at how music technology has opened new possibilities around sound manipulation. The question “How music can convey meaning” does not have an absolute answer, but the result of thesis shows different properties of music, and how these can be used to convey meaning.
