Rennebuportalen og maskemotiv

Abstract

Oppgavens hovedmål er å ta for seg maskemotivene som befinner seg på Rennebuportalens søylekapiteler, som har i liten grad vært undersøkt og diskutert. Rennebuportalen kommer fra en stavkirke i Rennebu, som dateres til rundt midten av 1100-tallet, som nå er bevart i NTNU Vitenskapsmuseet. Min undersøkelse er en motivstudie som først og fremst er ikonografisk. I oppgaven vil Rennebuportalens museale kontekst og proveniens bli omtalt. Jeg vil gjøre en komparativ analyse mellom motivene på Rennebuportalen til maskemotiver fra både stavkirkeornamentikken og steinskulpturen, for å diskutere portalens stil og dens mulige tilknytning til steinhuggermiljøet i Trondheim. Det finnes flere versjoner av maskemotivet som kommer til syne i både tre- og steinskulpturen, og jeg vil dermed trekke inn en ikonografisk analyse i spørsmålet om motivenes betydning.

The main goal of this dissertation is to have a closer look at the mask motifs that you can find on the column capitals of the “Rennebuportalen”. There has been little discussion and research done on this portal. The portal comes from a stave church in Rennebu, and dates back to the middle of the 12th century. It is currently preserved at the NTNU University Museum. I have conducted an examination of motifs, primarily iconographic. In this thesis I will look at the portal’s museum context and provenance. I will conduct a comparative analysis of the motifs on the portal with motifs found on other stave church ornamentation, as well as stone sculptures. By doing this I will discuss the portals style and its possible connection to the stonemasonry in Trondheim. There are several motifs that become apparent in both the wooden and the stone sculptures. I will be doing an iconographic analysis of them and their meaning, with a focus on “Rennebuportalen”.
