Kan lys og farge skremme? - Analyse av skrekkfilmane Midsommar og The Witch

Abstract

Denne bacheloroppgåva er ein visuell næranalyse av skrekkfilmane Midsommar (Aster, 2019) og The Witch (Eggers, 2015), der målet er å finne ut korleis lys og farge i skrekkfilm kan bidra til å framkalle stemningar samt frykt og andre kjensler hjå tilskodarane. På bakgrunn av at filmane er visuelt forskjellige, samanliknar eg dei og ser på samanhengen mellom tradisjonelle og ukonvensjonelle val når det kjem til farge og lyssetting i skrekk. Ved å bruke bilete frå filmane som døme, undersøker eg tema som dagslys, skuggar, mørket, fargepalettar og fargebetyding, ved hjelp av Thomas S. Sipos si bok om skrekkens estetikk, og Patti Bellantoni si bok om farge i film, i tillegg til anna litteratur.

This bachelor thesis is a visual analysis of the horror films Midsommar (Aster, 2019) and The Witch (Eggers, 2015), where my objective is to find out how light and colour can evoke certain moods and emotions like fear in the audience. On the basis of the films being visually different, I compare them and study the context between traditional and unconventional light and colour choices in horror. By using photos from the films as examples, I examine subjects like daylight, shadows, darkness, colour palettes and colour meaning, with the help of Thomas S. Sipos’ book on horror aesthetics, and Patti Bellantoni’s book on colour in film, amongst other pieces of literature.
