Fri og frank: Hvordan Martin Scorsese instruerer skuespillere

Abstract

Denne oppgaven forsøker å avgrense Martin Scorseses personinstruksjonsstil. Den søker å oppdage hva som gjør hans instruksjon unik og hvorfor han er i stand til å vekke godt spill. Hans instruksjon anskueliggjøres blant annet gjennom en analyse av instruksjonen i og rundt Raging Bull (1980). Den sammenlikner også Scorseses instruksjonsmetoder med de vi finner hos Alfred Hitchcock og Stanley Kubrick. Oppgaven finner at Scorsese øver i lengre perioder, at han tillater improvisasjon, at han bygger tillit med sine skuespillere og at han stoler på skuespillernes egne metoder. Den demonstrerer også hvordan Scorsese gjennom sine inspirasjonskilder og gjennom sitt samarbeid med enkelte skuespillere som er gått i lære hos teaterpedagogen Stella Adler i stor grad er påvirket indirekte av Stanislavskij.

The focus of this thesis is to understand how Martin Scorsese directs actors. It seeks to discover what enables him to inspire great performances in his actors. His method is illustrated, amongst other techniques, through an analysis of the instruction found in relation to Raging Bull (1980). It also compares Scorseses’ way of directing actors with that of Alfred Hitchcock and Stanley Kubrick. The thesis finds that Scorsese rehearses extensively with his actors, that he allows improvisation, that he builds trust with the actor and that he trusts the actors’ own approaches. It also demonstrates how Scorsese, through his sources of inspiration and through certain actors who were students of Stella Adler, was heavily and indirectly influenced by Stanislavski.
