Abstract

Målet med denne oppgaven var å belyse kinoens framtid, med fokus på norske kinoer, strømming og eksklusivitetsvinduer. Verden er i endring, og det er også kinoindustrien. Oppgaven vil se på hvordan de har håndtert konkurranse fra fjernsyn til fysisk media, fram mot dagens største konkurrent, nemlig strømming. Hva kan historien og nåtiden fortelle oss om kinoens fremtid? Oppgaven ser også på hvordan kinoen har utviklet seg, hva som gjør norske kinoer unike, eventuelle endringer i publikum og hvordan VOD kan ha endret industrien for godt. Det vil bli analysert hvilke prosesser som har blitt satt i gang eller akselerert under pandemien og hvilke publikums – og studiomotivasjoner som ligger til grunne for dette. På tross av pessimistiske spådommer tyder mye på at kinoen lurer døden enda en gang, takket være dens uerstattelige kollektive og kulturelle rolle.

The purpose of this paper was to shed light on the future of movie theatres, with a focus on Norwegian cinemas, streaming and distribution windows. The world is changing and so is the theatre industry. The paper wil see how they have coped with competition, specifically from television to physical media and towards today’s biggest challenger, namely streaming. What can the history and present hint towards the future of theatres? The thesis also looks at how theatres have evolved, what makes the Norwegian ones unique, change in attendances and how VOD might have permanently disrupted the industry. Which processes that have emerged or accelerated during the pandemic? And what audience -and studio motivations are implicit? Despite pessimistic predictions, much of the evidence suggests that movie theatres might just cheat death once more, thanks to its irreplaceable collective and cultural role.
