Film Franchise og Dens Særegenhet, The Matrix, Filmuniverset og Fandom

Abstract

I denne avhandlingen skal franchising som fenomen innen film defineres, og The Matrix universet vil undersøkes for å demonstrere hvorfor det er et ledende eksempel på en suksessfull filmfranchise. Til denne hensikten vil begreper som beskriver filmfranchisens særegenheter redegjøres for, og benyttes i en analyse av The Matrix franchisen for å eksemplifisere franchise begrepet i filmsammenheng. Analysen vil nå fram til at en filmfranchise vil ha særegne elementer innen sin adaptasjonsprosess, verdensbygging og relasjon til fandommen. Det er disse særegne elementene som gjør at en kan identifisere en filmfranchise. Sentralt for filmfranchisen er hvordan franchisens univers opererer som en merkevare framfor et produkt. The Matrix har styrket sin merkevare gjennom mange adaptasjoner og solid verdensbygging.

This thesis will attempt to define franchising as a phenomenon within film, and use this definition to elaborate on why The Matrix is a leading example of a film franchise. For this purpose the terms that deal with franchises distinctiveness will be explained, and then applied in the context of The Matrix to exemplify and to show the film related definition of the franchise term in practice. This will be done through an analysis which will show that a film franchise will have distinctive elements within its adaptation process, world building, and its relation to its fandom. These distinctive elements can be used to identify a film franchise. A central concept within film franchising is the franchise universe, which in the case of a franchise, will operate as a brand as opposed to a product. The Matrix has strengthened its brand through many adaptations and solid world building.
