Karakterengasjement med den umoralske protagonisten - En næranalyse av Arthur Fleck i Joker

Abstract

Denne masteravhandlingen undersøker og diskuterer hvordan usympatiske karakterer skaper engasjement. Oppgaven vil være todelt mellom en diskusjon av sentrale kognitive filmteoretikere, og en næranalyse av Jokeren i Todd Phillips sin psykologiske thriller Joker fra 2019. Jeg kommer til å anvende og diskutere teoretiske perspektiver fra kognitiv filmteori for å nærme meg en forståelse for hvordan filmens fremstilling av en umoralsk protagonist på ulike nivåer prøver å forårsake affektiv respons hos tilskueren. De mest sentrale teoretiske perspektivene for masteravhandlingen vil være Murray Smiths sympatistruktur og teorier om perverse allianser, Margrethe Bruun Vaages bok om antihelter og hvordan tilskueren engasjeres og til tider tar side med antihelt karakterarketypen, i tillegg til Carl Plantingas teorier og strategier om empatiske scener. Sammen vil disse peke ut ulike aspekter ved filmens emosjonelle appell, og forhåpentligvis gi leseren et innblikk om effekten av karakterens fremstilling.

This master's thesis examines and discusses how unsympathetic characters create engagement. The thesis is split between a discussion of key cognitive film theorists, and a close analysis of the Joker in Todd Phillips's psychological thriller Joker from 2019. I will employ and discuss theoretical perspectives from cognitive film theory to get an idea and understanding of how the film on different levels engages the spectator with the use of an immoral protagonist. The most central theoretical perspectives for this master's thesis will be Murray Smith's sympathy structure and theories on perverse alliances, Margrethe Bruun Vaage's book on the antihero and how the spectator engages and sometimes side with the antihero character archetype, in addition to Carl Plantinga's theories and strategies of the scene of empathy. Together, these will highlight different aspects of the film's emotional appeal, and hopefully give the reader an insight into the effect of the character's representation.
