The dissertation discusses how the British-Chinese relationship from the outbreak of the Cultural Revolution in 1966, to the exchange of ambassadors in 1972. The british-chinese relations was characterized by Great Britain and China's relations with the United States and the Soviet Union, respectively. It will also try to uncover how China's on and off relations with the Soviet Union affect China's needs for other allies and how the United States and Britain interact in several situations. The most important thing this dissertation can contribute is the focus on how Whitehall was dependent on reports from eyewitnesses at the embassy in Beijing, even though the flow of information was limited after the outbreak of the Cultural Revolution. Emphasis is placed on Hopson's description of the core of the Cultural Revolution. In addition, the purpose of the dissertation is to show how the information from the embassy is used by Whitehall to maneuver relations with China. The dissertation tries, in contrast to previous research, to show details in how the British-Chinese relationship varied during the period and which country always controlled the negotiations between China and Great Britain . In addition, the dissertation sheds light on how local conditions in China.
