En kildekritisk analyse av det fjerde korstog

Abstract

Denne oppgaven er en kildekritisk analyse som tar for seg to av de viktigste historikerne til det fjerde korstog. Disse er: Niketas Choniates og Geoffrey de Villehardouin. Oppgaven har som mål å diskutere to sentrale hendelser som tok sted under det fjerde korstog. Disse to temaene er: Hvordan Alexios Angelos IV sin rolle fremstår i de to kildene og de to forskjellige skildringene av plyndringen etter den andre beleiringen av Konstantinopel. Under gjennomgangen av disse kildene blir det gjort rede for flere forskjeller som er sentrale med tanke på spørsmålet vi ønsker å belyse i denne oppgaven.

Det blir gjort rede for en rekke likheter og ulikheter, samt tanker om Villehardouin og Choniates sine motiver og agendaer for å beskrive hendelsesforløpet slik de gjorde. Gjennomgående i oppgaven blir det også tatt inn andre synspunkt, representert av senere historikere som en del av prosessen for å forstå korstogets histografi. Det blir også stilt en rekke spørsmål som åpner for videre drøfting rundt temaet og eksemplene nevnt ovenfor. Og i oppgavens avsluttende deler samler vi alle trådene for å danne det beste bildet som mulig mot vår problemstilling.

This thesis is a source-critical analysis that addresses two of the most important historians of the Fourth Crusade. These are: Niketas Choniates and Geoffrey de Villehardouin. The thesis aims to discuss two key events that took place during the fourth crusade. These two events is: How Alexios Angelos IV's role appears in the two sources and the two different depictions of the looting after the second siege of Constantinople. During the review of these sources, several differences are explained that are central concerning the question we want to shed light on in this thesis.

Several similarities and differences are explained, as well as thoughts on Villehardouin and Choniates' motives and agendas for describing the course of events as they did. Throughout the thesis, other points of view are also taken into account, represented by later historians as part of the process of understanding the history of the crusade. Several questions are also asked that open up for further discussion on the topic and the examples mentioned above. And in the concluding parts of the thesis, we gather all the threads to form the best picture possible to answer the question at hand.
