Agder: Fra vikingtid til høymiddelalder- Utvikling, organisasjon og struktur: Agder og Norge i en komparativ analyse

Abstract

Oppgaven er en komparativ analyse angående utvikling, organisasjon og struktur i mellom Agder fylke og resterende norske områder i fra vikingtid til høymiddelalder. Oppgaven er sentrert rundt tre fokusområder:

1) Makt og økonomisk administrasjon - omhandler det tidlige avgiftssystemet i Agder kjent som "utskyld". Belyser også de mest fremtredene maktsentre og kongsgårder i Agder i den aktuelle perioden.

2) Kristendommens fremvekst og kirken som maktinstitusjon - Starter med en redegjørelse omkring kristendommens inntog i Agder. Videre blir det sett nærmere på kirke og statsmakten. Hvordan samspillet og administrasjonen mellom disse fremsto i samtiden. Siste del er en kort gjennomgang av tidlige kirker og kirkemakt i Agder.

3) Militær organisasjon – Primært fokus rettet mot leidangen og tilhørende faktorer, slik som skipreider og veter. En kombinasjon av sagakilder og annenhåndslitteratur. Også benyttelse av det aktuelle lovverket for Agder i perioden, Gulatingsloven.

Avslutningsvis følger en konklusjon hvor oppgaven tar stilling til hvorvidt Agders utviklingen, organisasjonen og strukturen eksisterte og fulgte resterende norske områder i fra vikingtiden og inn mot høymiddelalderen.

This thesis is a comparative study focused on development, organization and structure between the region of Agder and the remaining Norwegian areas from the Viking Age to the High Medieval Period. The thesis is centred around three subject areas:

1) Power and economical administration - deals with an early tax system in Agder known as “Utskyld”. Also illuminates the most prominent power centres and royal residences within Agder during the current period.

2) The growth of Christianity and the church as powerinstitution - starts with a clarification about Christianity’s growing position in the region. Then the relationship between church and state are discussed. How they interacted and how the administration between these two institutions was at the time. As a last point, there will be a short review on the churches and churchpower in Agder.

3) Military organization – Primary focus on the “leidang” system and contributing factors, like “skipreider” and “veter”. A combination of saga sources and second-hand literature. Also uses the original legislation for Agder during that period, the “Gulatingslov”.

I am ending the thesis with a conclusion surrounding if Agder`s development, organization and structure existed and followed the other areas in Norway from the Viking Age and into the High Medieval Period.
