Vil plikten rå følelsene? En vordende dronning portretteres i norske og britiske aviser

Abstract

Formålet med denne oppgaven er å gi et innblikk i hvilke egenskaper og handlinger ved dronning Maud norske og britiske aviser skrev om perioden 18. oktober til 18. november 1905. Hvilke egenskaper ved dronningen de var opptatt av, samt hvilke ord som ble brukt for å beskrive henne. For å besvare dette er det benyttet en komparativ analyse, hvor britiske og norske aviser blir sammenliknet. Denne sammenlikningen bygger i stor grad på diskursanalyse, og det legges vekt på både likheter og forskjeller ved avisenes fokus. De norske avisene er hentet fra Nasjonalbiblioteket, og de britiske er hentet fra The British Newspapaer Archives. Tidligere forskning vil benyttes for å videre belyse temaer som tas opp i avisene. Resultatet av den komparative analysen vil resultere i to, til dels ulike, inntrykk av den vordende dronningen. Formålet med oppgaven er imidlertid ikke å bekrefte eller avkrefte hvorvidt dette inntrykket stemmer med hvem dronningen faktisk var. Heller ikke å bekrefte hvorvidt det avisene skrev var sant. Funn i tidligere forskning som belyser og utdyper avisenes innhold benyttes derimot for å gi noe troverdighet til de inntrykkene man får av Maud. Når det kommer til tidligere forskning benyttes litteratur i stor grad i oppgaven. Dette da flere av bøkene bygger på et større arbeid med flere arkiv, og kilder som ikke er tilgjengelige for allmenheten. Da kun et fåtalls aviser er benyttet i analysen kan det være tilfellet at andre temaer knyttet til dronningen er belyst i andre aviser, noe som gjør at konklusjonen ikke er korrekt. På en annen side vil funn i litteraturen bidra til å skape troverdighet til funnene. Likevel er det ikke urimelig å påstå at dronningen var mer enn hva avisene vektla ved henne.

The purpose of this assignment is to give an insight to which characteristics and actions about queen Maud the Norwegian and British newspapers wrote about in the period between the 18th of October to the 18th of November 1905. Which qualities they focused on, as well as the words they used to describe her. To answer this, a comparative analysis is utilized where British and Norwegian newspapers are compared to each other. This comparison is to some degree based on a discourse analysis, and both similarities and differences are emphasized. The Norwegian newspapers are found at Nasjonalbiblioteket, and the British newspapers are found at The British Newspaper Archives. Earlier research is used to expand on the subjects mentioned in the newspapers. The result of the comparative analysis will give two, quite different, impressions of the queen to be. The purpose with this assignment is not to confirm or enfeeble whether this impression agrees with whom the queen actually was, neither to confirm or enfeeble what the newspapers wrote were true. The discoveries from earlier research that illustrates and expands on the content from the newspapers is, on the other hand, used to give credibility to the impressions one gets of Maud. When it comes to earlier research, literature is widely used. This is the case because several of the book written about Maud are based on a great work with different archives, and sources that are not accessible for the public. Where only a minority of newspapers are used in the analysis, other newspapers can have focused on other subjects about the queen, which makes the conclusions in this assignment incorrect. On the other hand, the discoveries from the literature can contribute to give credibility to the discoveries. Still, it is not unreasonable to claim that is was more to the queen then what the newspapers addresses.
