The main purpose of this thesis is to investigate the meaning of work and how this may influence our ‘sense of coherence’. This thesis consists of two papers. The first paper offers an overview of the theoretical foundation of work environment, ‘sense of coherence’, health, and socioeconomic status. The theories are presented from a health promoting view and a salutogenic approach. The second paper presents the empirical part of this thesis. It investigates the relationship between work environment, ‘sense of coherence’, socioeconomic status, and employment group. Hopefully, this thesis can provide new knowledge within factors that promote health and ‘sense of coherence’, and encourage further research within this field.nb_NO
