This study focuses on the lives of young lesbians and gay men from minority backgrounds. The focus is on the identity-related challenges that the informants experience, the impact of stigma, and how various challenges addressed using strategies. The theoretical perspective of this study is built upon Erwin Goffman’s stigma theory. His terms of the "stigmatized" and "the normal", as well as his concepts of virtual and actual social identity, is used to understand the perspectives of social identity and how respondents interpret their environments’ perception of them, and how the individual in various interactions chooses to under-communicate their identity. Goffman’s terms of passing and covering is used to distinguish the informants’ often changing presentation of themselves based on what interaction they are taking part in. In conducting this study, I have cooperated with the organization Skeiv Verden (Queer World). With assistance from the staff and volunteers of the organization, I have gained insight into the issues taking place in the "coming-out process". Skeiv Verden has been helpful with providing contact and recruiting informants for in-depth interviews. The empirical material consists of seven interviews with four women and three men, aged 17 to 30 years. Inspired by grounded theory and hermeneutic approach the analysis sheds light on the experiences informants have related to acknowledging their sexual orientation and telling others. The analysis consists of two analytical categories, "coming-out process" and "on stage". The findings are understood from these categories, wherein the focus lies on the impact of different settings and social environments, and the various interactions informants have with their family, friends, school, workplace, and the Norwegian and the ethnic community. The processes my informants have been through has led them to a large extent to choose their own identities and their lives, rather than to those awarded through tradition, norms and expectations from friends, family and society. Their respective situations have largely been characterized by stress and pressure. They have faced – and continue to face – a series of difficult and challenging situations, which means much for their daily life situation. Various interactions and relationships affect my informants' need of using different coping strategies to adapt their appearance and reduce their profile. They have a complex and particular life situation. This knowledge reflects a need for an equally special and complex understanding and insight for social workers who want to help individuals in similar life situations to get a better and more dignified life. There is currently little scientific data upon which to build such an understanding. This study aims to provide a basic insight into the complex issues, and in this way focus on both the individual's own problems as well as the scarce basis for building an understanding in the field of social work.nb_NO
