Alderdommen: Ulike Perspektiver på Aldring & Moralfilosofi

Abstract

Den eldende identiteten, at den store livsfortellingen forfaller, slik forfatter Johan Harstad her skildrer den, kommer til utrykk gjennom det samfunnsforskere og filosofer ofte omtaler som «narrative foreclosure”. I denne oppgaven vil jeg starte med å argumentere for hvordan dette begrepet kan brukes til å forsvare velferdsstaten og eldre sin moralske status. Derav vil hovedargumentene mine være at I) vi trenger et nytt begrep om helse og sykdom; II) at dette begrepet kan brukes som et forsvar for den norske velferdsmodellen; og III) at aldring, en fundamental prosess medvirkende til utviklingen av en rekke sykdommer i mennesket, burde adresseres ved at fremtidens helsepolitikk burde ha som mål å utvikle intervensjonsstrategier for å forberede menneskets levetid og «healthspan» (den friske og aktive delen av livet).

The aging identity, that the great narrative of life disintegrates, as author Johan Harstad depicts it here, expresses itself through what social scientists and philosophers often describe as “narrative foreclosure”. In this essay, I will start by arguing in favor of this term as a means of defending the welfare state and the moral status of the elderly. Hence, my primary arguments will be I) that we require a new term to describe health and sickness; II) that this term can be utilized as a means of defending the Norwegian welfare model; and III) that ageing, a fundamental process in the development of a number of health problems experienced by humans, should be addressed by integrating the development of intervention strategies to improve the life span and the “healthspan” (the healthy and active part of life) as one of the primary goals of future health policies.
