Outcome of Oil/gas exploration and production all over the world could probably describe oil as ‘a good servant and a bad master’. Oil is the mover of transportation and technological advancement of the world in contemporary times. Besides, oil just like most natural resources has led some countries to over depend on it,perhaps similar to the abundance of gold, diamond and bauxite in Ghana at the expense of other sectors, which often leads to retardation of those sectors; with subsequent outcome of bad development (Cordon and Neary, 1982, and Bruno and Sachs, 1982). Evidence from oil producing countries all over the world suggests that oil poses as a threat to most livelihood scenarios, notably fishing. Result of which leads to lose of jobs, unhealthy environments, poverty, human rights violation, proliferation of social vices and conflicts (Collier and Hoeffler, 2000, Amnesty International, June 2009 and IMF). Due to this, this study tries to examine the livelihood of the fisher folks along the western coast of Ghana, a region that has earlier on suffered the blat of the abundance of mineral exploration with no or little significance to local livelihoods in relation to the oil/gas industry at this early stage. Also policy measures and mitigation of any adverse effects or impact on local livelihoods are explored. With the aid of primary data obtained from qualitative methodology and secondary data production, the research outlines the following: Exploration of oil and gas along the western coast of Ghana has given rise to events such as the Fishermen/Jubilee conflict, rising cost of living, and anticipated environmental challenges. It can also be said that, the use of law enforcement agency as one of the steps of preventing the so-called Fishermen/Jubilee conflict may bring only a short-term solution. But due regards and respect for local institution and active participation of local people in instituting solutionsin this regard might be considered as time wasting but may yield a better result in the long run.nb_NO
