dc.description.abstract | Background: The many similarities between autoimmune diseases point to a common origin, also known as the autoimmune tautology. Pso p27 is an auto-antigen and has been found in several autoimmune diseases, first in psoriasis and later in rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis and sarcoidosis. Since multiple sclerosis (MS) and psoriasis share many common traits, an investigation into the presence of Pso p27 in MS patients is warranted.
Materials and methods: 74 samples were analyzed, 37 MS patients and 37 control individuals. A sandwich ELISA was used for detecting the Pso p27 antigen and indirect ELISA for detecting the anti-Pso p27 antibodies.
Results: Although no signficiant change in the levels of Pso p27 was found, higher levels for antibodies against Pso p27 weredetected with a significance of p < 0.001.
Discussion: The antibody results varied noticeably between plates. The reason for this is unclear, but is most likely due to plate variation or the inexperience of the laboratory worker. For this reason, the increase in Pso p27 found in CSF of MS patients compared to controls should be replicated in a larger study. | nb_NO |
