This thesis contains simulations and model testing of conventional- and improved mooring systems for aquaculture fish farms. It is based on a pre-project where the goal was to stabilize the net structure of a fish farm to avoid large deformation from currents and waves. The basis for comparison was conventional fish farms with sikertube or lump weights. The models tested in the pre-project were 1) diagonal ropes from the floater to the sinkertube 2) integrated sinkertube in the bottom rope 3) flatter bottom in the net pen 4) bridles to the sinkertube, the model with bridles to the sikertube showed most promise. This is the model that will be the focus of this thesis. By introducing bridles to the sikertube, and by lowering the connetor plates from 7- to 13 m depth, the simulation showed a residual volume of the net pen went from 52.3-81.6% og the model test 68.5-80.5%. The loads in the uppermost bridles went down approximately 100 kN, and the loads in the bottom hoops (connection between the sikertube and the net pen) were doubled for both simulation and model test. The model test proved to give higher loads in the bridles than the simulation did. Introducing bridles to the sikertube leads to a completely different load pattern in the components. The load frequency and amplitude in the upper bridles does not follow the wave frequency after being exposed to the lower bridles. By dimensioning an entire fish farm of 8x2 fish cages by the new configuration, the total investment cost of the components will rise by about 13% per fish cage. Without testing the new system by full scale production, it is difficult to say anything about its efficiency on operations and maintenance. Either way the system makes the fish pin stiffer, and it should be more easily handled in day-to-day operations, and should be more secure towards gnawing of predators. In addition, the larger maintained volume of the fish pen will lead to more room for the fish, which in turn will lead to improved fish health and decreased death rates for the fish.
