Laptop som musikkinstrument: Fortolkningsmessig fleksibilitet i musikkteknologisk praksis

Abstract

Interessen for laptopen som et musikkinstrument er i stadig vekst. Dette teknologiske verktøyet er riktignok ikke kun et instrument for musikk, men også for tekstredigering, regnskapsføring, regninger og mye mer. Laptopen er en teknologi av mange muligheter. I denne oppgaven er det laptopen som et musikkinstrument som undersøkes. Oppgaven sikter på å drøfte hvordan laptopen forstås som et musikkinstrument; hvordan fortolkning har påvirket musikkteknologisk praksis i et historisk perspektiv; og hvilke forutsetninger som bør ligge til grunn for utviklingen av undervisningsopplegg for laptopen.

For å gjøre dette tar blant annet oppgaven utgangspunkt i et utvalg episoder fra den musikkteknologiske historie, tre samtaler med ekspertinformanter og refleksjoner fra forfatters praksis. I analysen synliggjør det seg noen gjennomgående temaer som resulterer i tre konsepter: Forståelse, Kulturbærere og Ledende kulturer. Gjennom å forstå disse som en sirkulær prosess tydeliggjøres det hvordan forståelser over tid kan bli til ledende kulturer gjennom kulturbærere. Gjennom analysen utvikles det en modell, kulturbærersløyfa, hvor disse tre konseptene plasseres inn.

Ved å sette dette i lyset teorier fra feltet Science and Technology Studies (STS) får oppgaven et utvidet begrepsapparat til nytte for skildringer og diskusjon. I dette lyset blir laptopen betegnet som et fleksibelt fortolkbart artefakt. Dette artefaktet endrer våre forutsetninger for musikalske praksiser, samtidig som vi over tid vil forme teknologien som et resultat av sosiale prosesser. Gjennom å også betegne teknologi som kulturbærere i kraft av hvilke innskripsjoner designeren har gitt det, er digital audio workstations (DAWs) også kulturbærere.

Oppgaven har en didaktisk ambisjon gjennom å stille spørsmål ved hvilke forutsetninger som bør ligge til grunn for utviklingen av undervisningsopplegg. Her vokser det frem et behov for at undervisere opptrer som gode forbilder i møte med teknologi slik at den nye generasjonen med laptopmusikere får et reflektert forhold til teknologi.

The growing interests for the laptop as a musical instrument have become a reality. This technological tool is not only an instrument for music, but also for text editing, accounting, bills and much more. The laptop is a technology of many possibilities.

This thesis aims to discuss aspects of the laptop as a musical instrument; how interpretation has influenced music technology practices in the lights of historical events; and what is to be the foundation for the development of teaching programs for the laptop. To do this the thesis is basing itself of a selection of events from music technology history, conversations with experts and reflections from the author’s practice. Through the analysis three concepts are being developed: Understandings, Culture Carriers and Leading Cultures. By understanding these concepts as a circular process, it illuminates how understandings can be established as leading cultures over time through culture carriers. This process is developed in to a model, the Culture Carrier Loop, which acts like a feedback loop where leading cultures in turn will affect the understanding of new generations of laptop musicians.

In turn the results of the analysis are being put in the perspective of theories from the field of Science and Technology Studies (STS). The terminology from these theories benefits as a framework for discussing the laptop as a musical instrument. In light of this the laptop is defined by its interpretative flexibility. While the laptop changes our basis for musical practices, we are over time changing the laptop as a result of social processes. By denoting technologies as carries of culture–by the inscriptions that the designer has given it–digital audio workstations (DAW’s) are also carriers of culture.

The thesis has didactic ambition by asking questions on what the basis for the development of teaching programs should be. It comes to the conclusion that there is a need for teachers–as carries of culture–to act as good role models in their use of technology so that the new generation of laptop musicians can inherit a reflected relationship to technology.
