Every year between 70-80 % of the total energy not delivered is due to fault occurences in thedistribution network. In the time to come, the distribution network is faced with a number ofchallenges. Like the increasing reliability expectations, the increased energy demands and theimplementation of distributed generation. In addition to this, the aging infrastructure of thedistribution grid is faced with the increase of extreme weather conditions, which increases thelikelihood major power outages. At the same time, there is a rapid increase in new technology, which can be implemented to improve and facilitate grid operations. Different methods, components and sources of information that may be utilized in an effort to reduce the cost ofenergy not supplied, CENS, is investigated in this thesis.
A method is proposed to automatically generate optimal switching operations when faults occur inthe distribution network. The method utilizes the information about the grid which can beaccessed through DMS, as well as information about the fault type, and any fault indication givenby fault pass indicators. The method is divided into four subcategories, depending on what degreeof information that is available for the given fault. The four categories are fault location unknow, faulted zone identified, possible fault locations identified, and fault location identified. Eachsubcategory is tested on a distribution grid model supplied by BKK. Two different fault incidentswere simulated, and the switching operations were compared to those of the real fault incidents. The simulations are conducted using the DMS-software, iAM DMS, which is produced by Powel. All simulations are conducted at BKKs headquarter in Bergen.
The results of the simulations showed that the proposed method gave a reduction in CENS forboth faults, for all four subcategories. The percentage decrease in CENS varied greatly betweenthe two faults investigated. This is partly related to the deployment of CENS throughout the grid. This is confirmed by the conducted sensitivity analysis.
