Abstract
Based on reviewed available kick detection techniques, It was found pertinent the design of a model that seeks to detect kicks (via monitoring of volumetric changes during transient periods). This model will be based on conventional open drilling systems. The conventional open to air system is of choice for its simplicity when it comes to its design and ease of transferring whatever knowledge/idea gotten to be implemented on the closed loop drilling systems.

For the model to suit demands/ response to needs, that is being able to positively detect actual kicks, then it must be able to account for such factors that affect flowback volume (factors contributing to false alarms) such as surface pipe drainage, downhole events of ballooning, mud compressibility etc.

The constraints for such design will be on how to account for such rig related dynamics into the model in order to make sure it is responding to actual kicks.

The design specification requires that it recognizes a baseline profile for stable connections and compares the baseline to real time monitored flowback in order to detect kicks.
