Short description of the bachelor thesis:
Figures from 2017 shows that a total of 201 315 children from 0-19 were admitted
to Norwegian hospitals. Research shows that most of these children struggle with
anxiety and stress associated with hospitalization. Because of this we wanted to
learn more about what nurses can do to reduce this anxiety /stress as well as
possible.
Purpose: Our purpose was to find relevant articles that could give us answers to
our aim: How to avoid stress and anxiety in children admitted in somatic hospitals.
Method: We have used the literature study method. We have found six research
articles and have organized, systematised and reviewed these with critical eyes.
Results: Important elements to what we, as nurses, can do to avoid unnecessary
stress and anxiety in hospitalized children. The study has five main themes: -
Cooperation with parents / guardians -The environment in the hospital. -The
nurse's qualities. -Relaxing drugs and distraction. -Communication and interaction.
Conclusion: The children's anxiety and stress can be reduced in several ways.
Both through a good cooperation with the parents, where we emphasize good
information, and how we use the physical environment in the hospital through toys
adapted to the individual age step. It is also important that we reflect and improve
our qualities as nurses, especially with regard to the human plan regarding the
treatment of children. This creates a good relationship of trust, which is very
important for preventing anxiety and stress. We can also use the knowledge we
have about medication and distraction. Research shows that a combination of this
can often be the best. We also need to use different distraction techniques
depending on the child's age.
