Satisfaction of life in the Nordic countries: who is living unhappy?

Abstract

Denne oppgaven utforsker de sosioøkonomiske forskjellene i selvrapportert tilfredshet med livet mellom de fem nordiske landene og diverse andre europeiske land. De fem nordiske landene inkluderer Norge, Sverige, Danmark, Finland og Island. Datagrunnlaget som blir tatt i bruk er hentet fra den sjette runden av European Social Survey (ESS), som ble utgitt i 2012. Hovedmålet for sosioøkonomisk status som jeg bruker er antall år fullført heltidsutdanning, samt alder, etnisitet og kjønn. All analyse er utført ved bruk av Minste Kvadraters Metode (OLS). Mitt hovedmotivasjon for denne oppgaven er å utforske hvilke sosioøkonomiske grupper innen de nordiske landene som mer sannsynlig å rapportere en lavere enn gjennomsnitts selvrapportert tilfredshet med livet score. Analysene mine er i stor grad basert rundt tidligere litteratur og studier som omhandler den samme tematikken.

This thesis examines the socioeconomic differences in self-reported satisfaction of life between the five Nordic countries and various other European countries. The five Nordic countries being Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Iceland. The data being used is gathered from the 6th round of the European Social Survey (ESS), which was released in 2012. The main measure for socioeconomic status I have used is years of full time education completed, and also included is age, ethnicity and gender. All of the analyses are carried out using Ordinary Least Squares (OLS). My main motivation for this thesis is to examine which socioeconomic groups within the Nordic countries are more likely to report a lower than average self-reported satisfaction of life score. My analyses are largely based around previous literature and studies concerning the same issues.
