Vi blir stadig overraska - og skremt - av korleis klimaet skadar samfunnet. Kven hadde trudd at vi skulle oppleve alvorlege turkeskader i det våte Vestland? Og kven hadde trudd at ei av Noregs turraste kommunar – Skjåk – skulle bli utsett for flaum; for ikkje å nemne at flaumen skuldas massiv snøsmelting midt i oktober!!!!

Ei av dei størst utfordringane verda i dag står ovanfor er klimaendringane og konsekvensane av dei. Klimaforsking viser at både temperatur og mengde nedbør vil auke i tida framover, -noko som vil resultere i meir ekstremvær. Slike hendingar vil avhenge av kombinasjon av kor mykje klimaet endrar seg, og i kva grad samfunnet klarar å tilpasse seg klimaendringane.

Utgangspunktet for denne studien er Skjåk kommune i Oppland fylke som 14.oktober 2018 vart hard ramma av ein storflaum – ein 200-års flaum. Flaumen førte til store øydeleggingar langs vassdrag i heile kommunen. Føremålet med studien har vore å undersøke korleis lokalsamfunnet og Skjåk kommune opplevde å bli ramma av ein 200-års flaum, og korleis dei har handtert den i etterkant. For å svare på problemstillingane har eg gjennomført ein kvalitativ studie med intervju og dokumentanalyse som metode.

One of the biggest challenges we face today is the climate change and the effect of it. The climate projections refer to changes in both temperature and precipitation over time. The result of this is more extreme weather events, such as extreme flooding. How often such events occur will depend on a combination of how much the climate changes and the societies ability to adapt the changes. As well as the frequency of more extreme weather will the severity of such events also expand.

The topic of this thesis is the major flood in Skjåk municipality in Oppland County. The flood came abruptly and caused severe damage. This thesis investigate how the municipality and the local population, experienced the flood and its aftermaths. In this regard, community resilience as a term is used to describe this ability. In order to answer the research questions, a qualitative study method using interviews and document analysis have been used.
