dc.description.abstract | In recent years, Norwegian ice hockey clubs have struggled financially. This has led to a great amount of media coverage of the clubs' financial management. Because of this, this text will investigate on the reason why Norwegian clubs seem to struggle with financial management. We are going to take the Lillehammer Ishockeyklubb Elite to try to find out how ice hockey clubs work on budgeting, and why there are discrepancies between budget and accounting figures. The theoretical background is divided into two, where the first part deals with economics in sports and ice hockey, and the second part focuses on financial management in general, with a focus on budget and variance analysis.
The assignment has a qualitative approach and uses both qualitative and quantitative data. The data material consists of the club's budgets and accounts, as well as interviews with key staff in the club.
The analysis uses figures from the club's budget and statements for 2017. It emerges from the analysis that many of the deviations have the same causes as in standard companies, but deviations also arise due to a dynamic environment with sports factors that affect the economy.
