This is a bachelorthesis that takes a look at how placement affects the choice of restaurants in Ålesund municipality. Parts of our study is based on prior findings in the studies by Kivela (1997) and Feng Wang, Li Chen and Weike Pan (2016). Our thesis question is: “How does placement affect the choice of dining out in Ålesund?” Further we derived two research questions to highlight our thesis question: 1. Which factors affect loyalty to restaurants? 2. Are there other attributes that are more important than placement? Based on our research questions, we formulated 12 hypotheses. In order to answer our thesis question we made use of theory from academic textbooks, articles and our own quantitative questionnaire. Our questionnaire was a combination of questions from established scales such as: marketing scales handbooks, and a choice-based conjoint analysis. We used SPSS software in order to analyse the answers we got from our respondents in our questionnaire. To analyse the data in SPSS we conducted: descriptive analysis, factor analysis, multiple regression and ANOVA. We tested 12 hypotheses, where 6 of them were supported, but with varying significant results. We then discussed our hypotheses based off of research question number one. Our choice-based conjoint answers got discussed based off of research question number two. In hypothesis 11 we found out that respondents located outside of the city centre, showed a higher level of loyalty towards restaurants. Further, we found out that there was a number of different variables which affected loyalty towards restaurants. We also found out that there were other attributes which were of greater importance than the location of the restaurant. These attributes were: price of the food, the quality of the food and the type of food which were served. Our conclusion in this thesis is: That the physical location of the restaurant does have an affect on the customers choice of eatery, but that it is not the deciding attribute.
