Jazz dance, with its unique expression body language and together with jazz music, has far reached from its origin of Africa to all parts of the world. It is not difficult to notice from TV commercials and dance competitions that jazz dance is very overwhelming in Asia now; in the meantime, the ‘taste’ of jazz dance has also changed in Asian bodies from its origin place of Africa and later African American. Jazz dance is therefore investigated from two aspects: its function and influence on another culture; its ‘taste’ changed from its place of origin. The item is based on the fieldwork in Taiwan, Taipei National University of Arts, summer 2015. It is a summer school for high schools who want to see what potential university life and courses are like for them. The department of dance has offered five pillar courses: classical ballet, contemporary dance, Oriental dance (Chinese classical dance), Chinese traditional opera, and jazz dance. My main focus is on the jazz dance class. The dissertation aims to see jazz dance in Taiwanese female bodies in twofold: one is how jazz dance give Taiwan female new body attitude; another is how Taiwanese female body give new 'taste' to jazz dance from its modern origin place of US. It has the assumption that jazz dance has a function of opening up personality from rather singular layer to a more colourful spectrum of personality. In the meantime, in every culture, the 'embodied aesthetics' 'habitus' of body will give its new taste; the dance imagination behind , transmission process, crosscultural communication process will all have an influence on the 'taste'. During the transmission, an interesting focus is how the instructor transmit jazz dance-- it is her description in class as well as in the interview that inspired me-- how is “charm” transmitted through jazz dance could be a central focus line to help answer all relevant questions.
