The consequences of climate change are more noticeable in our everyday life than ever before. The awareness of what effects climate change will have on local communities have grown, and it has become clear that some form of adaptation is needed. The effects of climate change will be most noticeable in local communities, and in Norway it will be the municipalities who will take a front row seat in meeting climate changes. This means that adaptation to climate changes will have to be made in the municipalities, and this master’s thesis takes a closer look on how Melhus municipality works with climate change adaptation within spatial planning. It is absolutely necessary to include climate change adaptation when planning for the future. This is important for many reasons, for example to reduce risk and vulnerability. Spatial planning that takes climate change in to concern is an important tool that will reduce risk and vulnerability, and increase resilience. It should be a goal in itself to work towards a resilient community, and adapting to a changing climate is crucial to achieve that. This is a qualitative study which applies interviews and analysis. In addition to interviewing employees at Melhus municipality I have included document analysis of documents and reports regarding spatial planning and climate change adaptation within the municipality. The main focus in this thesis is how Melhus municipality include climate change adaptation in their spatial planning, the focus being on the planned housing development at Gimsøya. Gimsøya is a flat area located near a flood prone river, but the area is also close to the urban center and established infrastructure. The area being flat and located near a river causes a lot of challenges with respect to spatial planning, and certain measures should be taken. Climate change adaptation is the most likely solution for a resilient development of Gimsøya, in order to reduce risk and vulnerability.nb_NO
