Marine Drilling Risers are used when drilling for oil and gas is performed offshore. Its primary functions are to provide for fluid communication between the drilling vessel and the BOP Stack and the well, guide tools into the well and serve as a running and retrieving string for the BOP Stack. The riser string is made up of a large number of joints that are connected on the drilling rig prior to deployment. There are mainly three types of connection types available at the market; bolted flange type, dog type and Clip type. The bolted flange type connection is the most common. All drilling riser connection types have advantages and drawbacks. The flange type connection is considered to be the simplest, most rugged solution with good preloading capabilities, but has the drawback of being time-consuming to make up and brake out. The Dog type and Clip type is fast to make up and brake out, but cannot be preloaded as easy as the flange type and have lower load carrying capacities. To make the flange type connection solution competitive with the dog type and clip type with regards to connection time, the candidate has looked into alternative concepts for a better connection tool for the flange type connection. This due to the fact that the main problems with the current operation of running flange type risers, is the low speed and lack of reliability of the riser wrench. Connection time is becoming increasingly important as drilling is performed at greater water depth. Four main concepts have been evaluated with respect to ruggedness, production cost, connection time, suitability to be retrofitted to existing risers and HSE. The four main concepts are the hydraulic nut, the hydraulic tensioner, the chuck worm gear and the refined hand tool. The hydraulic nut was considered to be the best concept and was chosen to be developed further. The concept is based on replacing the original riser bolt with a set screw type bolt and a hydraulic nut. When the bolt is screwed in the nut applies the required preload in the bolt by pulling it with hydraulic pressure. A locking collar is then screwed down to retain the preload. This concept still requires some manual labour from the deck workers, but is most likely a faster and safer connection solution compared to the current riser wrench. Physical testing is required to verify the overall ruggedness of the concept.nb_NO
