Over the years, it has been little research about how parents travel with their kids to the kindergarten. My study focuses on this “forgotten” research topic. The theme is important, in particular because of the problems we have related to health and environment. The study aimed at identifying the travel habits and means of transport that parents use when dropping off and picking up their children at kindergarten. I wanted to find out what influence transport choices, and if land use is a factor of importance. In addition, I wanted to see what characterise those using car, bicycle, bus and those who walk to the kindergarten. I also looked at the rest of the itinerary to see if the parents use the same means of transportation to get to work. Finally, I investigated how the number of persons who use active transport (walking and/or bicycling) can be increased. Most parents of young children have long and complex routes of travel. By taking account for this, the study is presenting a picture of how it perceived by parents to use the different means of transportation (car, bicycle, walking and public transport). Furthermore, I have looked at how land use, in terms of areal category and roads, between the residence and kindergarten are, and how this affects the choice of transportation among the parents. I collected my data through a web-based questionnaire that was sent to 10 kindergartens located east in the city of Trondheim. I have split these kindergartens into two categories: centrally located (7) and peripheral located (3). The questionnaire was distributed in late September/early October of 2014. The response rate was high (53,9%), with 308 parents from different household answering the survey. The data was analysed through cross tables, correlation and multinomial logistic regression. Findings from the study show that parents largely use car when they are delivering and picking up their children in kindergarten. For some, this is necessary since their travel chain is long and complex. Those having residence less than 1 kilometre from the kindergarten are to a larger extent walking than using car when delivering and picking up their children. This implies that land use composition are influencing chose of means for transportation to the kindergarten.nb_NO
