| dc.description.abstract | In 1999, the Norwegian Parliament decided to establish a new military training area located in eastern Norway. The existing Hjerkinn military training area should be closed down and restored into an “original state” for the purpose of civilian use and a future nature protected area. This area is 165 square kilometers, located in Dovre and Lesja municipalities, Oppland County in Norway, and situated 1000 – 1350 m asl.
In such an ambitious restoration project, there are many participants involved, holding different relationship, views and opinions towards the project. The focus questions in this study are:
- What interests can be linked to the restoration of Hjerkinn military training area?
- And will this lead to conflicts of interest between the different participants?
- Can this project be termed as an inclusive process?
- What is the participant’s thoughts about the project and its future use?
- When can the project be called a successful project?
Nature and landscape is two complicated concept. To get a better understanding about these concepts they can be categorized in various subgroups. Nature is divided into: External nature, intrinsic nature and universal nature.
Landscape on the other hand can be divided into: landscape as representation, landscape as morphology and landscape as meaning. These categories are trying to make it easier for people to understand their surrounding areas. Unfortunately it is not as easy in practice.
This study highlights the views of interests related to the transformation of the landscape from former military status into future restored and protected status of Hjerkinn. In particular we discus if this project can be seen as an open process and to what degree the participants feel that they are involved and if their viewpoint have been heard. This is discussed in relation to the different participant’s position in the project and their personal interests and views on nature and land-use.
During this study it’s become clear that it is a lot of agreement among the participants. Almost everyone wives this project as including, but there is different opinions about different concepts. The biggest problem is what is going to preserved or removed from the military
