Abstract

Denne oppgaven handler om gruvedriften i Kvæfjord ved starten av forrige århundre. Gruvedriften i Kvæfjord var svært begrenset i både tid og omfang. Oppgaven gir kontekst til Kvæfjord og herredet før bergverkene kom, og kontekst til veksten og industrialiseringen bergverksindustrien opplevde i slutten av 1800-tallet, spesielt i Nord-Norge. Oppgaven tar for seg to lokasjoner, Bergsfeltet og Skår på Kveøya, og går igjennom bergverksaktiviteten som forløp på disse feltene. Ved å bruke rapporter av bergingeniører og bergverksstatistikk fra Statistisk sentralbyrå males et bilde av hvordan driften av gruvene i Kvæfjord foregikk. Folketellingen 1910 gir et øyeblikksbilde inn i befolkningen. Ved å andvende den fant man 34 menn som sto oppført med et yrke i tilknytning til gruvedriften på Skår. Flere av disse var fra Kvæfjord og flere var gruvearbeidere som eneste yrke. Noen tilflyttere stiftet familie og ble værende i herredet etter gruvedriften var avsluttet. Konene til gruvearbeiderne var stort sett nettopp det; koner. Gruvedriften ga lite økonomiske ringvirkninger utenom noen ekstra skatteytere i årene med gruvedrift, og noen flere skatteytere som var arbeiderne som ble igjen i herredet og stiftet familie.

This thesis presents the mining industry in Kvæfjord at the start of the last century. The mining industry in Kvæfjord was very limited in both time and scope. The thesis gives context to Kvæfjord and the municipality before the mining industry appeared, and context to the growth and industrialization the mining industry experienced at the end of the 19th century, especially in Northern Norway. The thesis focuses on two locations, Bergsfeltet and Skår on Kveøya, and goes through the mining activity these two locations experienced. By using reports by mining engineers and mining statistics from Statistisk sentralbyrå a picture is painted of the mining activity. The census for 1910 gives a snapshot of the population. By using it one found that 34 men were written with an occupation that relates to the mining in Skår. Multiple of these were from Kvæfjord and multiple had mining as their only occupation. Some foreigners started families and stayed in the municipality after the mining industry shut down. The wives of the workers were mainly just that; wives. The mining industry did not result in a whole lot of economical repercussions except a few extra taxpayers in the years the mining industry was active, and some more tax payers that stayed in the municipality and started a family.
