Waisenhuset

Abstract

Trondheims Waisenhus ble bygget i 1772 av Thomas Angells stiftelse og står sentralt i Trondheim sentrum. Waisenhuset har navnet sitt etter det tyske ordet waisen som betyr foreldreløs, og er en av Trondheims eldste institusjon for foreldreløse barn. Bygget har gjennom sin levetid huset flere ulike funksjoner, men eies i dag av Nidaros domkirke og Vår Frue menighet som bruker byggene til kontor og utleie. Anlegget består av et hovedhus med kontor og bolig i sørvest, et stabbur ombygget til bolig i nordøst og et uthus som brukes til lager i nord. Sammen omrammer de en gårdsplass som åpner seg mot Nidarosdomens vestfront. For å forstå bygningen har vi jobbet mye med oppmåling, analyser og historiske kilder. Denne kunnskapen har gitt oss et grunnlag for videre prosjektering. Vi har sett på Waisenhusets anlegg i sin helhet, men valgt å ha ekstra fokus på uthuset og dets tilknytning til anlegget. I vårt forslag har vi undersøkt potensialet i videreutvikling av uthuset, både gjennom tilbygg og ombygging. Konstruksjon og eksteriør har vært en spesielt viktig føring for oss og vi ønsker at endringene skal spille på lag med bygningenes egne premisser. ENGLISH SUMMARY: Trondheims Waisenhus was built in 1772 by Thomas Angells foundation, and has a central location in Trondheim centrum. Waisenhuset has its name from the german word ‘’Waisen’’, meaning orphan child, and was one of Trondheims first orphanages. The building has, through its almost 250 year old history, contained many different uses and inhabitants. Today it is used by the Nidaros Domkirke and Vår Frues congregation as office facilities and appartments for rental. The facilities consist of a main building with offices and apartments in the southwest, and two sheds in the north. One of the sheds are transformed into a detached house while the other is used for storage. Together they frame a courtyard which opens toward the Nidarosdomen cathedral. Throughout the task we have worked with a survey of the construction, several analysis, and historic sources. The knowledge we have contained has given us a foundation to present a suggestion for future use and changes to the buildings. We have studied the whole facilities, but also chosen to focus especially on the shed used for storage and its connection to the main house. In our suggestion we have studied the potential for new use for the shed both through adaptive reuse and new constructions. The exterior and existing construction has been especially important, and our projects attempts to play along with the buildings existing qualities and values.
