A diol functionalized maleimide 1-(2,3-dihydroxypropyl)-1H-pyrrole-2,5-dione 3 was prepared through a three-step synthesis from maleic anhydride via a Diels-Alder protection, a condensation reaction, and a de-protection via retro Diels-Alder. The three- step reaction had an overall yield of about 16%. The low yield mainly resulted from low conversion rates in the second step of the reaction, followed by difficulties during the work-up. In addition, a functionalized malonate, furan-3-ylmethyl methyl malonate 4, was prepared through a pyridine-catalyzed esterification reaction with 87% yield. All products were confirmed using NMR spectroscopy. A series of polyurethane copolymers with the maleimide as comonomer were synthesized with varying degrees of maleimide incorporated in the polymer backbone. The furan-containing malonate was covalently attached onto exfoliated graphene nanoparticles and characterized by TGA and Raman spectroscopy.
