LearnPathology - An Educational Software

Abstract

Bakgrunn: I diagnostisk patologi er det i dag en pågående overgang fra konvensjonell til digital patologi. Digital patologi har vært i bruk i undervisningen på medisinstudiet ved NTNU siden 2017. Under Covid-19-pandemien, ble alle mikroskopikursene gjort om til heldigitale kurs. Dataprogrammet som da var i bruk, manglet flere ønskede funksjoner og idéen om å skape et bedre digitalt læringsverktøy; LearnPathology, ble født. Målet med denne hovedoppgaven var å lage en quizløsning til det nye programmet og å inkludere spørsmålstypene i en quiz i gynekologisk histologi.

Metode: LearnPathology er et nettbasert, digitalt læringsverktøy utviklet for undervisning i histologi og patologi. I LearnPathology-prosjektet arbeider lærere, studenter, samfunnsvitere, en interaksjonsdesigner og utviklere sammen i iterative prosesser med månedlige møter og kontinuerlig epostkorrespondanse. Gjennom tverrfaglige diskusjoner drøftes funksjonalitet og layout, med hovedfokus på brukerne; studenter og lærere.

Resultater: I samarbeid med de andre deltakerne i prosjektet, har vi utviklet et sett med spørsmålstyper som allerede er inkludert i læringsverktøyet. De forskjellige spørsmålstypene har blitt brukt i quizen i gynekologisk histologi.

Konklusjon: Arbeidet som har blitt utført som en del av denne hovedoppgaven har resultert i en quizløsning i LearnPathology, og en ny quiz i gynekologisk histologi. Programmet er fortsatt under utvikling.

Background: In diagnostic pathology, there is an ongoing transition from conventional to digital pathology. Digital pathology has also been used in medical school teaching at NTNU since 2017. During the Covid-19 Pandemic, all microscopy courses had to go digital. The software in current use lacked several desired functionalities, and the idea of making a new learning tool, LearnPathology, was born. The aim of this master thesis was to make a quiz solution in this program, and to use these question types to make a gynecological histology quiz.

Methods: LearnPathology is a web-based, digital learning tool developed for learning histology and pathology. In the LearnPathology project, teachers, students, social scientists, an interaction designer and developers collaborate in iterative processes, with monthly meetings and continuous email correspondence. Through cross-disciplinary discussions, the functionality and layout are discussed, always focusing on the users; students and teachers.

Results: In collaboration with the other project participants, we have developed a set of question types that are now included in the software. The different question types were used to make a quiz in gynecological histology.

Conclusion: The work conducted as part of the current thesis resulted in a quiz solution in LearnPathology, and a new quiz in gynecological histology. The program is still under continuous development.
