avgjørende egenskapene n ̊ar man forsøker ̊a forutsi tiden som kreves for tilstrekkelig herding. Akryl
som økte over tid.
dringene i spekterene minimale.
regionale topper. TGA analysen er en annen nyttig tilnærming for ̊a karakterisere reaksjonen, da
brøkdelen som motst ̊ar termisk nedbrytning (i denne studien, opptil 800 °C), nesten utelukkende er
siloksannettet.
tilgjengelig alkoxysilan i ryggraden. Generelt ser det ut til ̊a være mulig ̊a justere tiden som kreves
for optimal herding ved ̊a velge b ̊ade et passende fuktighetsniv ̊a og molfraksjonen av alkoxysilan i
ryggraden.
gionen i IR-spektrene. Bindemidlets optimale viskositet er ogs ̊a avgjørende for riktig herding, som
ble bevist ved ̊a justere formuleringen av Ac2, hvor formulasjonen med lavere viskositet (med same
mengde alkoksysilan) herdet raskere.
dc.description.abstract | This thesis examines the curing behavior of three acrylic co-polymer binders (Ac1, Ac2 and
Ac3) containing reactive, alkoxysilane monomer, methacryloxypropyl trimethoxysilane, γ-MPS.
Alkoxysilanes undergo hydrolysis and subsequent condensation in the presence of ambient mois-
ture or liquid water. The catalyst used was dibutyltin diacetate, DBTDA. The reaction was
characterized by FT-IR, TGA, DSC and qualitative solubility and tackiness measurements. The
three coatings differed both in composition and the amount of γ-MPS, which appears to be one
of the defining properties, when attempting to predict the time required for a sufficient degree of
curing. Acrylic 1, containing the most γ-MPS, cured the fastest, followed by Acrylic 2. Acrylic 3,
which contained the least, cured the slowest. Relevant IR peaks were identified during the analysis,
including the methoxy peak at 2841 cm−1, the alkoxysilane peak at 1083-1088 cm−1, the resulting
siloxane peaks at 1064-1066, 1016 and around 1000 cm−1 and a potential silanol or broken Si – O–
bond at 910-920 cm−1, together with an evolving broad -OH peak in the 3400 cm−1 region. The
height of some of these peaks was tracked as a function of time, to provide an estimation of the
curing rate, though it should not be interpreted quantitatively. During the IR analysis, it was
discovered, that addition of liquid water into the binder prior to application, despite being immis-
cible, significantly improved the curing rate in all cases. However, the samples where the water was
not added eventually cured to a similar degree, but at a considerably slower rate. Furthermore,
it was discovered, that while low humidity (20-30% RH) is not optimal for the curing, the same
applies for the high humidity (75% RH), indicated by the TGA results. It appears, that there is
an optimal humidity range somewhere in between, possibly around 40-50%RH, where the curing
proceeds to the largest extent. In general, all the coatings were almost fully cured in a matter of 24
hours, some faster, a fact that was assessed by disappearance of the alkoxysilane associated peaks.
Even when the reaction was deemed complete, it still appears that not all the sites partake in con-
densation, silanols seem to be present, indicating, that while almost all methoxy groups participate
in hydrolysis, not all condense. Even though some post-curing appears to take place, the changes
in the spectra were minimal. It is very hard to interpret the spectra with respect to particular
siloxane structures, as there is also a lack of consensus in the literature about the interpretation of
the fingerprint region peaks. The TGA analysis is another useful approach of characterizing the
reaction, as the fraction that resists thermal decomposition (in this study, up to 800 °C) is almost
certainly the siloxane network. Given that, it is possible to find out the value (ash content) that
the particular binder should approach, when cured optimally and then assess, whether a particular
curing attempt has reached this value. The maximum ash content was measured to be 17 w.t%
for Ac1, 14 w.t% for Ac2 and 9 w.t% for Ac3, all at 40% RH. There appears to be a rather strong
dependence of the ash content on both the relative humidity during curing and the amount of the
available alkoxysilane in the backbone.
Generally, it appears to be possible to tune the time required for optimal curing by choosing both
a suitable humidity level, and the molar fraction of the alkoxysilane in the backbone. It also
appears that in the case of these binders, the condensation does not proceed fully, with some
sites remaining hydrolyzed. It was shown that silanols are most likely responsible for the broad
OH peak. It remains difficult to attribute any specific siloxane structures (type of cage, or Tx
nomenclature) without employing 29Si NMR, as there is a lack of consensus in the literature for
the fingerprint region of the IR spectra. Optimal viscosity of the binder is also crucial for proper
curing, as was proved by adjusting the formulation of Acrylic 2, where the formulation with lower
viscosity (containing the same amount of alkoxysilane) has cured faster.
