It has been shown that clay is a good material to capture and store carbon dioxide, which is one method to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. However, there's a possibility to dope the clay with cations that can improve these properties.
This project has seen use of the density functional theory (DFT) based programme Quantum ESPRESSO in order to perform self-consistent field (SCF) calculations for clay, more specifically fluorohectorite, nickel dihydroxide, carbon dioxide and combinations of these. Vibration spectra were also examined for these systems, to a somewhat lesser degree.
A system involving HCO3 bonded to nickel hydroxides had a ground state energy calculated to be 1.33 eV higher than the ground state energy of a system with CO2 and Ni(OH)2 by themselves. This can point to nickel dihydroxide not being suitable as a cation to improve the relevant properties of clay.
