Introduction/background: Deaf and reduced hearing is a vulnerable group, that need more attention in mental health and depression. This theme has awakened an interest in me because I experienced it under working practice. This task will explain the hearing difficulties for children and youth, because the earlier years are crucial for the further development.
Purpose: The purpose of this task is to present how communication difficulties for deaf and reduced hearing problems for children and youth can affect depression.
Method: The task deals with literature studies as a method and includes five peer reviewed articles and other literature that is relevant.
Results: All the articles present studies about communication difficulties in children and youth to the ones with hearing problems. Further, the articles present findings in how these studies can affect depression. The results in the five articles forms the foundation of the three main themes, that I have discussed in the discussion part or the task: 1. To not meet the children’s needs, 2. Abuse and traumas due to communication difficulties, and 3. impacts on the mental health.
Conclusion: For those who have hearing difficulties, the quality of life was strictly worse, due to communication difficulties, mental health issues and exposure of traumatic experiences. These issues had an impact on the depressive symptoms for the children and youth with hearing problems. The family relationships and the children’s childhood environment are quite relevant, but the parents were several times seen not fulfilling the children’s needs on their missing communication abilities, which led to loads in the relationship. Keywords: Deaf and reduced hearing problems for children and youth, abuse, traumas, depression.
