The British political perspective on Spain, 1936-1945

Abstract

Oppgaven tar for seg en analyse av det britiske forholdet til Spania i perioden 1936-1945. Den spanske borgerkrigen var en konflikt der ideologier som kommunisme og fascisme stod mot hverandre. Storbritannia valgte en linje der de ikke intervenerte til tross for innblanding fra både tysk, italiensk og sovietisk hold. Resultatet ble et fascistisk Spania under general Franco fra 1939. Regimet var ikke-deltagende under andre verdenskrig, noe som var sterkt påvirket av en blanding mellom britisk politisk press og diplomati. Hvilke Agendaer som lå bak det britiske forholdet til Franco-regimet er spørsmålet som forsøkes å besvare.

The paper discusses the British relations with Spain both under the Spanish Civil War and with the Franco-regime during WW2. The Civil War of Spain was a conflict were the ideologies of communism and Fascism clashed. Britain, despite the involvement of Germany, Italy, and Soviet, decided to maintain a non-interventionistic stance towards the conflict. The conclusion of the conflict led General Franco to power and a fascistic government ruled Spain from 1939. The regimes non-belligerency in WW2 was heavily affected by the British both political pressure, as well as diplomacy towards Spain. The question which is discussed revolves around the agendaes that created the foundation of the British thoughts on the Franco-regime.
