«… Aldrig før har det for avholdssakens seir været saa betydningsfuldt at flertallet i kommunestyret bestod av avholdsmænd.» This quote was written in the newspaper Søndmøre Folkeblad, October 11th 1916, in relation to the municipal election in Ålesund, Norway. In this thesis, I will review some of the reasons why and how the majority of the votes for Ålesund city council in the period 1916 and beyond, went to temperance people. I will be emphasizing the temperance people's own party, “Avholdspartiet”, and the election campaigns in the municipal elections of 1916 and 1919. I want to investigate whether the temperance people were more than their own party, and who they were. Then I will look at the election results for each year and see if the differing results can be explained by the social changes of this time. By this I mean the World War 1 and the need for “Avholdspartiet”. I will investigate how the women of the temperance movement played an important role in the municipal elections, even though the voting figures and the number of women on the lists were lower than for the men. This will be reviewed in context of the women`s movement, with a focus on women’s right to vote and their involvement in the temperance movement.
