Her kjem dei olympiske leikane inn.
Throughout time, sports has been concerned with a lot more than just alethic achievements, the carrying of the national flag, national anthems and medals. The sports arena has a way of bringing the world together with a focus on good health and activity. In this sense, sports is an important contributor in reflecting those values we humans choose to follow as it gathers people from all over the world with the shared interest for sports. Therefore, our ideas of the ideal society and the ideal human being become expressed through sports. This has led several nations and associations to view the sporting arena as a way of assimilating more financial benefits and influence. In doing so, the size of the sporting arena becomes crucial, as it has the ability to connect the sports with the outside world. This is where the Olympic Games becomes relevant. Since its origin, both the interest towards the Games and its size has grown tremendously. State powers have realized just how important of a role the Olympic Games has played in creating new international connections, as well as keeping old and traditional friendships alive and prosperous. However, in the aftermaths of the alethic achievements, the use of the Games in other areas than sports has grown. The honor of being host has led some hosting nations towards using their role as a means to creating a better image of themselves and simultaneously covering up human rights violations and other injustices. This is called sportswashing, a term used to describe when sports are being used as a means to falsely depict a country in a more positive way than the truth reveals, and serves as a great threat towards the continued existence of the Olympic Games.
This paper will examine how different Olympic Games has been used by the hosting countries to conduct sportswashing. The chosen Games are Berlin 1936, Moscow 1980, Vancouver 2010 and Beijing 2022. Through a thorough analysis of peer viewed articles, this paper will demonstrate that hosting countries in fact do exploit their role as hosts in order to conduct sportswashing, where the cover up of human rights violations happen. Furthermore, there will be a discussion regarding how the Olympic Games has been used as an arena for human rights actions and why the IOC, the International Olympic Committee, has a lot of power to change this negative development of human rights violations in connection with the Olympic Games. Ultimately, there will be a discussion regarding why boycotts of the Games acts as a counterpart to sportswashing, but that it in the end is very challenging to separate those two because boycotting is a way of executing further power in getting the boycotting parties´ interests on the agenda.
