dc.description.abstract | Vi studerer såkalt første ordens Fermi-akselerasjon for kosmisk stråling,
bak Fermi-mekanismen.
dc.description.abstract | We consider the first order Fermi acceleration process of cosmic ray par-
ticles, i.e. shock acceleration, which is the most popular mechanism for
explaining the spectrum of cosmic ray energies below the so called ”knee”.
Starting from a Monte Carlo simulation valid for acceleration in non-
relativistic shocks, the thesis reviews the theoretical groundwork for and
implements the modifications required to generalize the model to work
also for the case of relativistic shock velocities. Along the way we review
the required transport theory needed to understand both relativistic and
non-relativistic shock dynamics, as well as cosmic ray propagation in tur-
bulent plasmas, and we provide a review of the fundamentals of the Fermi
process. Finally we present the cosmic ray spectra computed with the
improved method, which are in good agreement with expectations and
observations. We also identify some limitations of the model and propose
how it can be improved further in future works, as well as some possible
applications for the code.
