dc.description.abstract | This thesis examines the possibilities single women had for social mobility in the three
mining communities Røros, Løkken and Sulitjelma in 1920. This is done by comparing the
occupation of the women’s childhood primary caretakers to the women’s own occupations.
This is called intergenerational mobility. The amount of social mobility in a society is used as
a measure of how open the society is. The general perception has been that Norway became a
more open society since the mid-1800s. But was this true for women?
All the data used in the thesis is collected from the Norwegian censuses,
Folketellingene. The women are found in the 1920 census, while their childhood primary
caretakers are found in the census closest to the women’s births. The occupations of both the
women and the caretakers are divided into categories and ranked according to their social
status to examine the possibilities of social mobility.
One of the main findings is that there were differences between the three mining
communities. They were different both in which occupational categories the women had, as
well as how the women ranked compared to their childhood caretakers.
In contrast to the general perception, this thesis shows that it was most common for
single women to replicate socially. The majority of the women did not have social mobility,
neither upwards or downwards. Among the women who did experience social mobility,
mowing upwards was more common than moving downwards.
The thesis also emphasises that there are other factors than the occupation of the
childhood primary caretaker that affected the women’s occupations. The factors that are
discussed is age, the primary caretaker being someone else than the father and migration.
