The Round Table Group og IP-studiets opprinnelse

Abstract

Denne masteroppgaven tar for seg faget internasjonal politikks framvekst. Fagets historie har vist seg å være både mangelfull og inneholde flere direkte feil. I denne oppgaven konstruerer jeg en ny fortelling om fagets opprinnelse. Jeg tar utgangspunkt i the Round Table Group. Kan denne gruppen fungere som grunnlaget for en ny fortelling om fagets opprinnelse? For å svare på dette undersøker jeg gruppens påvirkning på tre sentrale områder: forskningsinstitusjoner, internasjonale konferanser og utdanningsinstitusjoner. Jeg konkluderer med at en fortelling med the Round Table Group fungerer godt som en mer empirisk forankret versjon av fortellingen om faget internasjonal politikks fremvekst.

This master thesis concerns the emergence of the academic field international relations. The fields history is proven to be both deficient and wrong in some areas. In my thesis I construct a new tale of how the field emerged based on the Round Table Group. Is it possible to create a new tale about the fields emergence concentrated around this groups work? To answer this question I study the groups impact on the institutionalization of three important areas: research institutions, international conferences and educational institutions. My conclusion is that a tale based on the Round Table Group works well as a more empirical anchored version of the tale of the emergence of the academic field international relations.
